njemački književnik, kršćanskom etikom nadahnuti humanist i pacifist; njegovi ironijom protkani romani (Skupni portret s damom, Brižljiva opsada i dr.)proniknuli su u psihološka stanja i iskustva njemačkog naroda iz 2. svjetskog rata i značajno utjecali na promjenu u poslijeratnoj duhovnoj klimi u Njemačkoj; predvodnik prve generacije poslijeratnih pisaca koji su odlučno raskrstili s nacizmom (Grupa 47); Nobelova nagrada za književnost 1972.
