1. mit. Titan koji je ukrao bogovima vatru s Olimpa i predao je ljudima, veliki dobročinitelj čovječanstva; Zeus ga je kao buntovnika kaznio zakovavši ga na stijenu na kraju svijeta (na Kavkazu), gdje je svakog jutra dolijetao orao i kljucao mu jetru koja bi preko noći zacijelila; oslobodio ga je Heraklo; ovjekovječen u Eshilovu Okovanom Prometeju, u Ovidijevim Metamorfozama, u brojnim kasnijim literarnim, likovnim i glazbenim interpretacijama (Tizian, Goethe, Beethoven, Byron itd.)
2. pren. utjelovljenje hrabrosti, pobune u ime dobra, donosilac svjetla i lučonoša napretka, predvodnik na putu iz mraka, stradalnik za dobrobit svih ljudi
